The centre of Hillerød shows in abundance that it is an old centre of trade. The town centre is in a state of continuous development and transformation, and is benefiting from competition with the city of Copenhagen.

Hillerød has attracted a number of technology-intensive companies in recent years, with the greatest concentration within biotech and medicine, IT and the environment. These companies include Foss Analytical, Novo Nordic, Biogen Idec and Ellab. The municipality has a well-founded range of service businesses and trades, together with several consultancy-based companies which service the local population and business life.
